The centerpiece of this part of The Guardian chronology is the discovery of the Bahá’í Faith by Queen Marie of Romania, introduced to its luminous teachings, to Bahá’u’lláh and to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá by Martha Root, the stalwart servant of the Guardian, her open letters in newspapers of the time about the Bahá’í Faith, and her personal correspondence with Shoghi Effendi. Surrounding this main event are the ongoing legal predicament regarding the Most Great House of Bahá’u’lláh in Baghdad and the annulled Bahá’í marriages in Beba, Egypt, the Jahrum martyrdoms, and the Maraghih persecutions. . Mary Maxwell, 15 years old, arrives on pilgrimage for the second time to meet her Guardian. It is also the first pilgrimage of future Hand of the Cause Zikhrullah Khadem. We meet Effie Baker, hostess of the Western Pilgrim House, Shoghi Effendi translates the Hidden Words with the editorial help of future Hand of the Cause George Townshend. Dr. John Esslemont, Shoghi Effendi’s English seretary passes away very suddenly. Shoghi Effendi travels to Switzerland in 1925, 1926, and 1927, and we end with our usual sections, intended to get to know Shoghi Effendi more intimately: One section on Shoghi Effendi’s character and a second section on the Guiding Lines (a term taken from the Priceless Pearl) of his Guardianship, his guiding principles.
