Bahá’í Explorations

This quote from the Forty Ḥadíth of Nawawí emphasizes the importance of intention in human actions. It suggests that the value and outcome of any action are determined by the underlying intention. If an individual’s purpose is noble, such as migrating for the sake of Alláh and His messenger, then the action is elevated to a spiritual level. Conversely, if the intention is driven by worldly desires, such as personal gain or marriage, the action is defined by those motivations. This teaching encourages individuals to reflect on their intentions and align them with higher principles, as intentions ultimately shape the moral and spiritual significance of their actions.

“Actions are but by intention and every man shall have but that which he intended. Thus he whose migration was for Alláh and His messenger, his migration was for Alláh and His messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated.”
